Moulds for Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants and Fire Testing
Part of the Industry Applications cluster. For an overview of all sectors we serve, see Reusable Casting Moulds for Industry and Research.
The development, formulation and quality control of industrial adhesives, structural sealants, protective coatings and passive fire protection materials requires a comprehensive programme of mechanical and chemical testing that depends on accurately-prepared specimens. Whether you are developing a new structural epoxy adhesive for aerospace applications, qualifying a polyurethane sealant for construction joints, or testing an intumescent fire protection system, the quality of your test specimens determines the quality of your performance data.
At Reusable-Molds.com, we supply precision reusable casting moulds to adhesive, sealant, coating and fire protection manufacturers across the UK and Europe. For UKAS-accredited testing laboratories running third-party adhesive qualification programmes, we supply the same mould range used by manufacturers in their own development laboratories.
Adhesive and Sealant Formulation Development
In the development of a new adhesive or sealant formulation, the ability to produce consistent, reproducible specimens is fundamental to programme integrity. If specimen geometry varies between formulation batches, measured differences in mechanical performance may reflect preparation artefacts rather than genuine formulation improvements. For polymer research facilities developing novel adhesive chemistries, our non-contaminating surfaces ensure specimens are unaffected by mould residue.
Bulk Specimen Preparation
Tensile dumbbell specimens: Our panel moulds produce flat plaques of consistent thickness from which dumbbell specimens are die-cut or machined. For custom plaque dimensions custom industrial moulds specified by customer test plans, we quote within 24 hours.
Compression specimens: Cube or cylinder specimens for compressive strength and modulus testing of structural adhesives, gap-filling compounds and structural foams to ISO and ASTM standards.
Peel and fracture specimens: T-peel, 90-degree peel and climbing drum peel test specimens require adhesive layers of controlled thickness. Consistent adhesive layer thickness requires consistent mould geometry.
Adhesive Bond and Interface Specimens
Lap shear specimens: Single lap shear testing to ISO 4587 or ASTM D1002 is the most widely used method for characterising structural adhesive shear strength. We manufacture assembly fixtures that control bondline thickness, overlap length and width during cure.
Butt tensile specimens: Our butt tensile specimen moulds control adhesive layer thickness and ensure the two adherend faces remain parallel during cure.
Protective Coating Research
Industrial protective coatings — epoxy, polyurethane, polyurea, zinc-rich primers and specialist marine and offshore coatings — are tested for adhesion, flexibility, hardness, impact resistance and corrosion protection. Our flat panel moulds produce uniform substrate surfaces for coating application. For marine coating development specifically, see our civil, geotechnical and marine moulds page.
Sealant Mechanical Testing
Construction and industrial sealants are tested for tensile adhesion, elongation, compression set, movement accommodation and adhesion-in-peel to EN 15651, ISO 11600 and related standards. We supply moulds for sealant specimen preparation in both standard and custom geometries.
Passive Fire Protection Material Testing
Passive fire protection encompasses intumescent coatings, cementitious spray-applied fire protection, fire protection boards, firestop sealants and structural fire engineering materials. Developing, testing and approving these materials requires rigorous specimen preparation governed by demanding European and international standards.
Cementitious fire protection materials: Cube or cylinder specimens for compressive strength, bond strength and density verification. These specimens share dimensional requirements with standard concrete and cement specimen moulds, though the material chemistry can differ significantly.
Intumescent compound specimens: Cast specimens of defined initial geometry for expansion performance and residual strength testing after intumescence. Our moulds produce specimens with the dimensional accuracy that quantitative expansion measurement demands.
Epoxy and resin-based fire protection materials: Our chemically resistant, non-stick moulds handle epoxy and phenolic fire protection materials without degradation. For custom specimen geometries specified by EN, ISO or BS fire test standards custom industrial moulds, we quote within 24 hours.
Fire Engineering Research and Third-Party Approval
Academic fire engineering research groups and manufacturers seeking third-party approval for passive fire protection products both require extensive specimen preparation for compliance testing. For UKAS-accredited testing laboratories preparing test assemblies, we provide fast turnaround on custom mould sizes to meet project timelines.
Chemical Resistance
Our mould material is resistant to the complete range of adhesive, sealant and fire protection chemistries — epoxy, polyurethane, MS polymer, silicone, acrylic, cyanoacrylate, anaerobic, reactive hot melt systems and cementitious fire protection compounds. The non-stick surface ensures clean specimen release without contamination, preserving surface integrity for contact angle measurement, XPS and surface energy characterisation.
