Custom Moulds for Industrial and Technical Applications
Part of the Industry Applications cluster. For an overview of all sectors we serve, see Reusable Casting Moulds for Industry and Research.
Standard mould sizes serve the majority of routine testing and casting requirements. But industrial and technical applications frequently demand more than the standard range can offer. Non-standard specimen geometries specified by test standards, bespoke casting dimensions required by product designs, unique mould configurations for specialist research programmes, and custom sizes demanded by client specifications — these requirements cannot be met by off-the-shelf products.
At Reusable-Molds.com, custom sizing is a core part of what we do. Every mould we produce is built to order. We quote within 24 hours and dispatch within five working days. The same dimensional accuracy and non-stick surface performance UKAS testing laboratory moulds that applies to our standard range applies identically to every custom mould we produce.
Why Standard Sizes Are Not Always the Answer
Test standards specifying unusual dimensions: ISO, ASTM, BS and EN standards across different industries specify a wide range of specimen geometries — many of which do not correspond to any standard mould product. A laboratory working to a standard it has not previously used will often find its existing moulds are the wrong dimensions. This is particularly common in fire testing and passive fire protection coatings, adhesives and fire testing mould systems where standard-specified geometries rarely match general laboratory mould ranges.
Client-specified dimensions: In contractual testing and qualification programmes, clients sometimes specify dimensions that differ from standard test methods — to match their internal laboratory, compare with historical data, or test material behaviour at a specific scale.
Research geometries: Academic and industrial research programmes frequently require specimen geometries not covered by any existing standard — compact tension specimens for fracture mechanics, double cantilever beam specimens for adhesion testing, tapered specimens for gradient property studies. For university research programmes, this is the norm rather than the exception.
Specialist environments: Nuclear decommissioning research, offshore materials testing and high-temperature mechanical testing often require specimen geometries outside all standard ranges. For full details on these applications, see our nuclear and polymer research moulds page.
Problems with Improvised Custom Fabrication
Inconsistent quality: Hand-built moulds vary between fabrications. Two moulds built to nominally the same dimensions will rarely be truly identical, introducing inter-batch variability into test data.
Poor durability: Timber swells, foam compresses, adhesive joints fail. A mould that performs adequately for the first few uses may be dimensionally unreliable by the twentieth.
Inaccurate dimensions: Hand fabrication using general workshop equipment rarely achieves the dimensional accuracy that professional specimen preparation demands. Tolerances of several millimetres are common — not acceptable for specimens where cross-sectional area is used to calculate stress.
Advantages of Our Custom Precision Moulds
- Any internal dimension — we manufacture to any specified length, width and height
- +/- 2mm standard tolerance on all internal dimensions; tighter tolerances available for fracture toughness and fatigue specimen preparation
- Straight sides throughout — walls machined straight and square, not tapered, ensuring consistent specimen cross-section from top to bottom
- Consistent quality across matched sets — inter-mould variation within a set held to the same tolerance as individual moulds
- Inherently non-stick, chemically resistant surface on every custom mould regardless of the material being cast
- Quoted within 24 hours, dispatched within 5 working days of order confirmation
How to Order
We need the following to provide a quotation:
- Internal length and width — plan dimensions of your casting
- Internal height — depth of your casting
- Required tolerance — state +/- 2mm standard unless your application requires tighter
- Material to be cast — so we can confirm compatibility
- Quantity — single moulds and matched sets of any size equally welcome
Provide these details via our contact form or by email and we will respond with a quotation and confirmed lead time within 24 hours on working days.
Applications
Manufacturing Quality Assurance
Manufacturers of concrete products, polymer compounds, adhesives, coatings and composite materials use custom moulds to produce specimens in the exact dimensions required by their product specifications. For adhesive and coating manufacturers coatings, adhesives and fire testing mould systems with non-standard bondline geometries, custom moulds are the only solution.
Specialist Research Environments
Fire testing laboratories, nuclear materials research facilities, offshore materials testing groups and high-temperature mechanical testing operations all frequently require geometries outside standard ranges. For wind energy materials research, custom panel moulds are used to produce blade laminate specimens in dimensions specified by aerospace-derived test plans.
Product Development and Prototyping
Product development programmes require specimens in the dimensions that the design demands, not dimensions that happen to be available. For marine and boat building prototype applications civil and marine moulds, custom moulds allow manufacturers to cast prototype hull sections and structural fittings before investing in full production tooling.
