Moulds for Civil, Geotechnical and Marine Engineering

Part of the Industry Applications cluster. For an overview of all sectors we serve, see Reusable Casting Moulds for Industry and Research.

Civil and geotechnical engineering encompasses a vast range of materials and testing applications that go well beyond the standard concrete cube. From grouting compounds injected to stabilise tunnels and foundations, to shotcrete applied to cut slopes and excavation faces, to chemically stabilised soils forming the base of roads and embankments — these sectors involve materials that must be characterised through rigorous specimen testing.

The marine industry is one of the most enduring users of glass fibre reinforced polymer composites. GRP has been the dominant material for recreational boat hulls and marine structures since the 1960s. The testing and quality assurance of marine materials shares many requirements with our composite material testing moulds — particularly the need for flat, parallel panel surfaces and non-contaminating release.

Geotechnical and Ground Engineering

Grouting and Ground Injection Materials

Cementitious and chemical grouts are used for ground stabilisation, void filling, structural repair and permeation grouting. Grout specimens are cast as cubes or cylinders for compressive strength testing, and as prisms for flexural testing. The mix proportions used in geotechnical grouts often differ significantly from structural concrete. Our non-stick mould surfaces ensure clean release without the surface damage that can occur with adhesive mould release.

Cement and microfine cement grouts: Quality control requires regular cube and cylinder specimens for compressive strength verification. For the full range of standard concrete and cement specimen moulds, see our dedicated concrete page.

Chemical grouts — polyurethane, acrylate and silicate systems: Used for fine permeation grouting and water cut-off applications. Our moulds are chemically resistant and compatible with the wide range of reactive polymer systems used. For non-standard borehole or column dimensions, our custom mould service covers any size.

Shotcrete and Sprayed Concrete

Shotcrete is used extensively in tunnel construction, rock slope stabilisation, underground mining and geotechnical retaining structures. Quality control requires cast cubes and cylinders prepared from fresh shotcrete mix. Our moulds produce the standard specimens used in shotcrete quality control programmes on tunnel and ground engineering projects.

Stabilised Soil and Ground Improvement

Cement, lime and chemical binders improve the strength of weak soils for road construction, embankment foundations, contaminated land treatment and deep soil mixing. The treated material is characterised through unconfined compressive strength testing of cylindrical specimens. We manufacture custom cylinder moulds in any diameter and height combination to suit specific stabilisation testing requirements.

Ground Anchors and Infrastructure Repair

The performance of grouted ground anchors, rock bolts and soil nails depends critically on the quality of the grout annulus. Grout specimens prepared from the anchor grout mix are tested to verify specified compressive and flexural strength requirements. Infrastructure repair mortars, cementitious patch repair systems and structural strengthening compounds used in rehabilitation all require specimen preparation — our moulds serve UKAS-accredited testing laboratories and specialist contractors alike.

Marine and Boat Building

GRP Laminate Panel Casting

Marine composite structures operate in one of the most demanding environments in materials engineering. Sustained salt water immersion, cyclic wave loading, UV exposure and thermal cycling all degrade composite materials over time. Our precision flat panel moulds produce GRP laminate panels with consistent thickness, flat parallel faces and the dimensional accuracy needed for tensile, flexural, compressive and interlaminar shear test specimens.

The non-stick surface releases cured laminates cleanly without release wax or spray release agents that can contaminate laminate surfaces. For carbon fibre composite work in high-performance marine applications, see our composite material testing moulds.

Resin System Development and Adhesive Testing

Marine composite manufacturers developing new resin systems require specimen moulds for mechanical and environmental performance testing. Our moulds handle the full range of marine resin systems without degradation. For the full range of adhesive bond and lap shear specimen moulds coatings, adhesives and fire moulds used in marine bonding system research, see our coatings and adhesives page.

Prototype and Tooling Applications

Before investing in production moulds, manufacturers cast prototype sections, joints and fittings in our reusable moulds to verify dimensions, resin volumes and structural performance. For custom marine section dimensions custom industrial moulds not covered by our standard range, we quote within 24 hours.

Marine Research Institutions

Marine research institutes, naval architecture departments and classification society laboratories undertaking research into marine composite structures all require specimen casting moulds. For university marine engineering and naval architecture departments, our university research mould range provides the same precision and flexibility.
